Take Extra Care in Icy Conditions

The present worsening spell of severe cold conditions has prompted the Chief Medical Officer Sally Davies to warn older and less fit people to take extra care and to follow the weather forecasts.

Dozens of deaths have arisen from the icy conditions across Europe. On Thursday night, temperatures plummeted to -11C (12F), while on Friday the Met Office warned of snow showers in eastern England with light snow falls in East Anglia and Kent. Although many areas could expect some sunshine and dry weather the temperatures were, it said, likely to remain just above freezing.

There is a possibility of severe ice on roads, so older people need to take extra care to avoid falls and slips.

Ms Davies said: "During a cold spell, older people and those with underlying health problems, such as heart disease or respiratory conditions, can all be at higher risk of becoming ill. Icy conditions can make surfaces extremely slippery and older people should take extra care to avoid slips and falls."

"If you do not want to brave the cold outside there are simple ways to keep warm at home, such as drawing curtains to block out draughts, drinking plenty of hot drinks, and wearing lots of light layers of clothing."
