A group of over-50s in Coventry have decided that they wanted their own Olympic Games. Part of this decision was inspired by the idea that age should not be a barrier to enjoying and competing in sports.

According to the Coventry Telegraph, Age UK Coventry is encouraging people to establish their own Community Games via the programme “We Can Do It”. With support from the charity, people will be able to take part in sports via the Nintendo Wii Fit and Kinect Xbox 360.

Activities that will be offered include ten-pin bowling, tennis and golf, offered in computer game format. According to Age UK, taking part in these activities will help older people to get healthy and to stay healthier for longer.

Age UK’s Fit as a Fiddle team at Centre AT7 is running the We Can Do It event. It will take place on 15 May.

Dave Moorcroft, the former Olympian and ambassador for Coventry, will host an opening ceremony for the event, which will include advice and tips on ways to maintain an active lifestyle later in life.

Officially, the event received the London 2012 Inspired Mark award for innovative projects and for its support of the Olympic and Paralympic Games legacy.
