Bobble Day on 10 February was the annual fundraising event to as part of Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign which raises funds to ensure that older people keep warm and well in the winter cold. This year many celebrities took part in the cevent which encouraged British people to get out their most vivid winter woollies.
Taking part were Joanna Lumley from Sapphire and steel and Saint star Roger Moore. Rather aptly Roger Moore as a young man used to model knitwear to supplement his income.
Roger said before the event: "This ‘big knit’ now supports Age UK’s Bobble Day and I’ll be urging everyone to wear their favourite knitwear on February 10th: you too could look as debonair, suave and sophisticated as me - Bobble-O-Seven! But more importantly, you will also be helping to save lives by supporting Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign.”
Joanna Lumley added: "Please join me in making a donation to Age UK to help older people who are suffering from the cold this winter. It's a hugely important cause; let's Spread the Warmth together."
Another celebrity, Roxanne Pallett said that she has much respect for the older generation as she was raised by her grandma and she wholeheartedly supports the Spread the Warmth campaign and helped out on Bobble Day.
Bobble Day was set up to draw attention to the plight of older people suffering from the cold winter spells. Every day over 200 people die in winter from cold related issues. It is part of Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign which provides year-long information and practical help to older people throughout Britain, including delivering warm and nutritious meals and helping with heating problems.
Age UK's fundraising director Paul Farthing said prior to the event: “Bobble Day is definitely a chance to have fun by wearing warming fashion items and finishing off woolly outfits with a colourful Age UK bobble, but there is a serious issue at its heart. February is often one of the coldest months of the year and many older people will be suffering. By getting involved in Bobble Day you can help us change this.”
Age UK is urging people to add their names to a petition calling for an emergency winter plan to save lives, as well as having a facility on the website for people to make a donation of £5 or £10, and it lists the ways people can help the Spread the Warmth Campaign.
