For over 60s who love travelling by train and visiting all those places they never had time for in their previous life or revisiting favourite haunts, the Senior Railcard seems a good opportunity to make up for lost time!




The card costs just £26, working out at just £2 a month. It entitles the holder to 1/3 off all standard and First Class fares to anywhere in the UK. You can also use it for advance fares so in this way you can make even more savings on your travel. and it can also be used to purchase Gatwick Express tickets. You can buy one for a three-year period for £65, saving you £13 and not having the hassle of yearly renewal.

Your railcard is valid on weekdays, weekends and public holidays, but of course in common with other railcards it can't be used at morning peak periods.

The best way to obtain your Senior Railcard is to order online from the Railcard website. You will need to verify your eligibility online with the number from either your driving licence or your passport. You'll then receive your application number by email and your new Railcard will arrive within one working day by first class post. Once you've ordered online you can't pick up your railcard from the train station.

However, you also have the option of visiting your nearest staffed train station, travel agent which has been licensed by National Rail or you can order it over the phone. you can also use your birth certificate if ordering from a travel agent.

Once you have your Railcard there is a host of interesting days out to choose from. Currently on the senior railcard site there are on offer off-Peak returns to Blenheim Palace with a sample fare from Southampton to Oxford saving £12.50, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre with a saving of £17.50 on a Liverpool to London off-peak return and Chepstow Castle saving £8.45 on an off-peak return from Birmingham to Chepstow.

Your new Railcard will certainly take you to some interesting and cultural places where you can indulge in the history and culture of your destination.
